Why We Crave Fun (Even as Adults)

When we get older, fun seems to take a backseat but that doesn’t mean our desire for it has waned. Learn why we may still crave play and the importance of it.

Remember our younger, carefree days? Back to simpler times of playing with friends after school and laughing at the playground? When we get older, fun seems to take a backseat as we make way for responsibilities and obligations, but that doesn’t mean our desire for it has waned. Play is an intrinsic behaviour that follows us through the years, contributing to our development as kids and helping us to unwind and bond as adults. Here’s why we may still crave play, the importance of it and how we can include those we love into our yearning for merriment.

Basic Human Need

Our brains are wired to seek lightness, pleasure and exploration. Neuroscience shows that the same reward systems that make play vital for children remain active throughout our lives, urging us to engage in activities that spark curiosity, laughter and wonder. Play stimulates creativity by encouraging us to think beyond routines, fuels imagination by letting us discover possibilities without pressure and provides an emotional release that enables us to maintain mental well-being. We thrive on occasions where we can step away and simply enjoy being in the present.

Creates Emotion-rich Experiences

Emotion-rich experiences stand out against the backdrop of everyday life. Moments filled with happiness and a sense of freedom influence our brains more deeply. They embed themselves in our memory far more vividly than routine or predictable days. Such playful instances spark heightened emotional responses, strengthening the neural connections tied to those experiences and making them the ones we replay in our minds years later. Craving play is, in many ways, craving those standout memories, the ones that light us up, remind us of our capacity for joy and stay with us long after the time has passed.

Stress Relief

As we get older, stress levels often rise, weighing heavily on our mental, emotional and even physical well-being. Chronic stress can leave us feeling drained, anxious and sometimes even cause long-term health issues. This is why play remains such a powerful antidote. Partaking in fun activities, whether through games or lighthearted bonding, triggers the release of dopamine and endorphins, our brain’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. It lifts our mood and eases tension, allowing us to reset, laugh and let go.

Fosters Spontaneity

Life can easily feel scripted, days planned down to the minute, roles clearly defined and the pressures of social expectations. Play disrupts that script, inviting moments of surprise, silliness and improvisation that show us we are more than our to-do lists. Beyond reconnecting us with our own cheerful spirit, flashes of spontaneity also make it easier to mingle with others in genuine ways. We drop the guarded, “managed” version of ourselves, which helps others feel comfortable doing the same. That shared openness and authenticity create a natural ease in conversations, breaking down barriers that typically come with formality. Parents, especially, can deepen relationships with their children on equal ground, without the constraints of authority or responsibility.

It’s easy to associate play only with childhood, but in reality, fun doesn’t come with an expiry date.
